The Impact of Lighting on Health and Productivity
Replacing old lighting with modern LED-technology isn’t just about reducing electricity bills; the benefits go far beyond that. Lighting has a profound impact on how my colleagues feel and perform, and I want everybody at Beneli to benefit of good quality work environment

Light is a powerful force, not just for visibility but for our overall well-being. Recent research emphasizes the critical role of light in maintaining:
- good sleep
- alertness
- circadian rhythms
- mental health
- Increased concentration
- Increased motivation
As the Beneli employees spend a lot of time indoors, the quality of lighting in our workplaces and living spaces becomes increasingly significant. This article explores the profound influence of lighting on our health, well-being, and productivity.
The Power of Natural Light
Natural light invigorates us, enhancing brain function, cognitive abilities, and alertness while reducing the likelihood of falling asleep. It’s a biological pick-me-up.
A lack of daylight can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to decreased job performance.
The Consequences of Poor Lighting
Incorrect lighting in workplaces is a hidden issue in many Swedish companies. Often underestimated, lighting can significantly contribute to improved productivity, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced quality of work. However, outdated lighting technology persists, with fluorescent lights emitting inadequate, dim, and yellowish illumination in many workplaces, including offices, schools, and healthcare facilities.
The problem stems from obsolete technology that should have been replaced long ago. Despite the availability of flicker-free fluorescent fixtures since the early ’90s, much of Sweden’s workplaces continue to rely on outdated lighting, as reported by the Swedish Energy Agency. Additionally, factors like reduced window size for energy conservation, and limited office space in central areas further diminish access to natural light at work.
Transitioning to Modern Lighting
For Beneli, switching to modern lighting technology isn’t just about reducing electricity bills; the benefits are far-reaching. Lighting plays a vital role in our mood and performance. If all outdated lighting were replaced in Sweden, annual energy savings of six billion Swedish Crowns could be achieved. For Beneli it means a 50% reduction of the kilowatt hours used.
Striving for a Healthier Work Environment
Natural daylight remains the gold standard. However, when natural daylight is unavailable, electric daylight replicates the spectrum and color temperature of midday sunlight, as recommended by the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
Appropriate lighting levels and distribution are crucial in workplaces. Recommendations vary based on the type of work, but generally include lighting levels of 500 lux on desks and 300 lux for general lighting.
LED Lighting
LED lighting allows for automatic adjustment of color temperature and light intensity to simulate a healthy circadian rhythm indoors. This solution is particularly useful for workplaces with early morning or late-night shifts, helping employees stay alert during the day and wind down in the evening.
Conclusion
The impact of lighting on our health and well-being cannot be understated. From natural light to advanced LED solutions, Beneli´s choice of lighting significantly influences our mood, productivity, and overall quality of life. As we move toward a sustainable future, we’re not just brightening our spaces; we’re contributing to a healthier, more productive, and happier life.
